The driver, the mechanic, the girl, the competition / GTO, the road and of course the cars, the cars. Simple ingredients, but a great film. Though at first glance a straight-forward tale about two guys racing through the southwest in their ‘55 Chevy, Hellman manages to address several deeper themes with only the most minimal tools; sparse dialogues, no real plot to speak of. This driving movie is about finding direction in life, dealing with loss and disappointment and builds on the rude awakening out of the ’60’s dream. Impressive stuff!
